Hurricane Katrina
The votes are in, and The Konformist readers have spoken. Hurricane Katrina is your choice for the 2006 Beast of the Year - a choice that is well deserved.
In choosing Hurricane Katrina, we are not just recognizing the hurricane itself, but the criminally negligent response to it by George W. Bush and his cronies, negligence which led to the flooding of one of America's most treasured cities, New Orleans. Indeed, the apparent negligence and incompetence was so vast, there are some who believe that the flooding was not due to mistakes but due to design. Whether or not such conspiracy theories are true, some of the crude statements by members of the GOP leadership following Katrina (including one from Shrub's own momma Babs Bush) makes clear a repulsive glee at the misery to the downtrodden in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Conspiracy or not, Hurricane Katrina will go down in history as a code word for the massive failures of the Bush Team to deliver on its even most basic of promises: to protect the people they pledge to serve. Along with 9-11 and the Iraqi Quagmire, Katrina is a vivid example of the BushMob's failures which have led to thousands of deaths. The good news, if any, is that Katrina represents a turning point in the Bush Kreep's fortunes: in the past, when disaster has struck, they have been able to shamelessly exploit it to their own cynical benefit. In this case, the widespread revulsion which followed shows that history is finally beginning to catch up to Bush and his pals' failures. With his approval rating at 32 percent and falling quickly, history may be now for the Bush Team. It's about time.
Runner-Up:
In the unlikely event that Hurricane Katrina can no longer fill its duties as Beast of the Year, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is ready to take over the crown. Rest assured the BOTY trophy is in good hands either way, as Mahmoud has been a prime beast himself.
